Pregnancy Journey

Pregnancy is a miraculous and exciting time. While your body undergoes profound changes, prioritising self-care is essential for your wellbeing and your baby’s healthy development.

What to Expect

  • Hormonal surges of oestrogen & progesterone affect skin, hair, and nails.

  • The “pregnancy glow” comes from increased blood flow (up to 45% more volume).

  • Skin changes: pigmentation (melasma “mask of pregnancy”, linea nigra, darkened nipples/scars), breakouts, vascular changes, skin tags, keratosis pilaris.

  • Hair and nail growth may alter, with some thickening or fragility.

Skin Support

  • Avoid during pregnancy: retinoids (oral + topical), high-concentration salicylic acid, hydroquinone/arbutin, benzoyl peroxide (uncertain), chemical sunscreens, essential oils, DHA tanning pills, sunbeds.

  • Safe options:
    Gentle cleansers (ceramides, squalene)
Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide)
    Niacinamide
    Azelaic acid ≤10%
    Hyaluronic acid
    Ceramides
    Vitamin C
    Centella Asiatica (Cica)
Glycolic & lactic acid (low concentrations)
Moisturisers (including coconut oil for comfort/stretch marks)

In-Clinic Treatments

  • Gentle facials (deep cleansing, oxygen, hydrating)

  • Lactic acid chemical peels (mild only)

  • LED Light Therapy

  • Relaxing hydrating skin masks

Wellness Note

If itching or skin concerns become troubling, always consult your Midwife or a qualified skin specialist such as Amy or Lyndsay at AL Medical.

Pregnancy is a transformative journey — most skin changes are temporary and resolve postpartum. Focus on safe, gentle care and embrace this stage with confidence.
